Royal Stoke to Become Leading Centre for Robotic Surgery in the UK

The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) has ambitious ideas for Royal Stoke University Hospital. It aspires to be the UK’s largest center of excellence for robotic-assisted surgery. Through this transformation Royal Stoke will be at the forefront of surgical innovation. Within the next 10 years, we plan to perform 90% of all significant keyhole procedures using robotic assistance.

Royal Stoke, in Stoke-on-Trent, will become the first hospital in UK to use game-changing technology. This novel approach allows surgeons to feel tissue resistance during surgery, in real time. This development now represents an exciting new frontier in a more comprehensive effort to improve surgical accuracy and positive patient impact. Introducing the “Magic Leap” surgical system! It gives surgeons access to detailed, 3D, digital images of patients’ spines in real time during surgery, increasing their precision and mastery over complicated procedures.

The UHNM hopes to reduce the burden of this initiative in their organization by saving approximately 3000 bed days annually. Projections indicate that number would rise to at least 5,000 bed days per year following the expansion. This affordable robotic technology will help over 1,000 patients per year. It will enable the most advanced and delicate of procedures, from major trauma and pediatric emergency surgeries to open-heart procedures.

In 2023-24 alone, the NHS implemented 70,000 operations via this innovative method. NHS projections show a promising landscape ahead. By 2035, they expect to do some form of up to 500,000 of those operations across the country using these types of techniques and methods.

“This expansion significantly strengthens our ability to deliver robotic surgery across a wider range of complex procedures,” stated Philip Varghese, a consultant colorectal surgeon at UHNM. His words highlight how vital this step is to helping practitioners achieve this level of surgical care and efficiency.

Royal Stoke’s architectural design includes other striking features like the red and yellow cladding at its base. This bright palette reinforces the structure as it climbs multiple storeys above the ground. This new facility is more than just a hospital and it’s well on its way to becoming a beacon of modern, cutting-edge health care in the region.

Coates, a representative of UHNM, mentioned that “supporting projects that make a lasting difference to local communities remains a core focus of the foundation.” He added, “This investment will allow more patients across the region to benefit from world-leading surgical care closer to home.”

Royal Stoke is preparing for a massive change. Today’s announcement will set new standards for surgical excellence and improve patients’ access to the most advanced medical technologies available anywhere.
