TerraForm Acquires Steward Creek Solar Project to Boost Renewable Energy Development

TerraForm Power has also recently announced that it would acquire the Steward Creek Solar project from Hexagon Energy. This decision is one of the most monumental advances toward expanding renewable energy throughout the United States. This visionary project will be instrumental in establishing the country’s long-term energy requirement. Now, it arrives woefully at a time of booming demand and grid limitations.

The Steward Creek Solar project alone will be among the 10 largest photovoltaic developments in the nation. It will be carried out in two stages. Each phase will generate around 1.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy per year once operational. Even though the project received about $75 million less than requested, the first phase of the project will begin construction in 2027. We’re looking at commercial operations starting in 2029.

With a renewable development pipeline totaling approximately 7 gigawatts (GW), Steward Creek Solar signifies a substantial commitment to advancing renewable energy sources. The just-completed project hit an important new milestone! It recently obtained a key 600 megawatt (MW) interconnection agreement with TerraForm Power, Commonwealth Edison and PJM Interconnection. This agreement is key not only for building out generation capabilities, but for incorporating that power into the current grid infrastructure.

According to Mark Noyes, a representative from TerraForm, that’s a big deal.

“This landmark project highlights our ability to deliver renewable energy at scale during a period of unprecedented power demand and grid constraints. Steward Creek Solar demonstrates the growing role renewables will play in meeting the nation’s long-term energy needs.”

Hexagon Energy’s Matt Hanztmon, too, emphasized the need for collaboration to make this endeavor work. He stated,

“Steward Creek is a flagship project for Hexagon, and we sought a partner with the expertise and capability to bring one of the country’s largest solar projects to successful completion. The TerraForm Power team brings deep experience and a strong track record, and we are excited to see the project move forward.”

The Steward Creek Solar project is a testament to the increasing global demand for renewable energy solutions. This transition comes in direct response to mounting climate change impacts and energy security threats. Actual construction wouldn’t start until 2027. Everyone involved—from stakeholders to state and local lawmakers—feels that this project will provide a radical improvement in energy supply and set the stage for similar renewable initiatives across the country.
