In a stunning sign of progress, four astronauts have safely returned to the surface of Earth. Their presence was due to an unplanned medical evacuation of the International Space Station (ISS). Expedition 18 crew members Mike Fincke, Zena Cardman, Japan’s Kimiya Yui, and Russia’s Oleg Platonov were forced to leave the ISS early. Their departure was born from a health crisis for one of the crew members. They were only there to complete a traditional six-and-a-half-month-long mission. This important mission started soon after they arrived at the ISS on August 1.
Her early departure represented a departure from their mission tempo. The team had been happily dreaming of all the rigorous research and experimentation they could accomplish on the ISS. Despite these successes, one crew member’s subsequent illness forced them to return early. Mission control has not provided further specifics about the medical issue. Instead, they made the right call and put the health and safety of the astronauts first above all else.
The four astronauts disembarked the Dragon Endeavour spacecraft at approximately 01:30 local time (09:30 GMT). They traveled back to Earth for 11 short hours. Finally, they all splashed down off the coast of California. This successful landing is yet another milestone as NASA continues to develop a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system to carry its astronauts into space.
In recent presentations, NASA officials said that the early return had not been part of the original plan. They were quick to point out that the crew’s safety remains their highest priority. The agency has protocols in place for such situations to ensure that astronauts receive timely medical attention if necessary.
