TotalEnergies’ recent approach has been a surprising and welcome bold step towards the company supporting renewable energy. They recently signed a joint development agreement to deliver 800 GWh worth of renewable electricity to SWM over the next decade. This contract will support three of SWM’s manufacturing plants located in France: Papeteries de Saint Girons, PDM Industries, and LTR Industries.
Under this agreement, TotalEnergies will take an active role in procuring the required renewable electricity. They will draw from approximately 50 megawatts from their current renewable base in France. This strategic partnership strengthens TotalEnergies’ position within the growing renewable energy market. It additionally backs their ambitious goal of reaching more than 100 terawatt-hours (TWh) of net electricity production by 2030.
TotalEnergies is pursuing a more diversified energy mix. This encompasses solar generation, both onshore and offshore wind energy, and flexible resources such as combined cycle gas turbines and energy storage technologies. As of October 2025, the utility listed an installed net gross renewable generation capacity of more than 32 gigawatts (GW).
Giuliano Scilio, a representative from SWM, emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating, “This agreement secures half of our French electricity needs from renewable sources for the next decade, a decisive step toward our commitment to significantly reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2033.”
He further elaborated on the implications of this contract for SWM’s operations: “For an energy-intensive industry like ours, this isn’t just an environmental milestone. It is a strategic investment that gives us cost predictability and strengthens our ability to offer customers genuinely sustainable solutions.”
Along with its recent contract with SWM, TotalEnergies is on track to expand its renewable energy portfolio worldwide. That’s why we’re so excited about the company’s recent partnership with Google! Under their 21-year PPA, they will provide Microsoft with 1 TWh of audited renewable electricity originating from Citra Energies solar facility in northern Kedah, Malaysia. This collaboration is a testament to TotalEnergies’ commitment toward advancing sustainable energy technologies. It does consistently and deeply support big business in its quest to get greener.
