Benfleet Pharmacist Embraces Technology to Meet Increasing Patient Demand

HEMA patel, an independent pharmacist working in Benfleet, has gone all out to meet the increasing demand on pharmacy services. Her independent pharmacy fills about 30 patients per day. A surge of visitors has inspired Patel to expand her facilities and bring in new technology.

To handle this new influx of demand, Patel’s pharmacy has created more consultation rooms. She argues that these improvements are all examples of “the best use of our talent” as clinicians. The increased space makes it easier for staff members to interact with patients while providing services in a more efficient manner.

To make dispensing more efficient Patel has begun automating the process with a specialized robotic device. This piece of genius hidden in the back room speeds everything up. This innovation not only speeds the dispensing of medications, but it lessens the burden on staff. Despite the success of this system in her Benfleet location, Patel has expressed concerns about the financial feasibility of implementing similar technology at her other three pharmacies. As she pointed out, the price of these innovations could be prohibitively expensive.

Patel has not shied away from talking about the myriad ways that community pharmacies are under siege. He added that the entire sector is “on its knees with funding.” She highlights the immediate need for more fiscal compensation from the national government. This support is vital to ensuring that dispensaries remain economically viable over the long term. Most recently, the funding for the core community pharmacy contractual framework increased to £3.1 billion for the period 2025-26. Patel contends that this amount is still not enough to cure existing needs.

The busy chemist in Benfleet serves as a model for how technology can enhance pharmacy services, yet Patel remains cautious about its broader application. She recognizes that even though there are clear advantages to automation, the upfront costs of implementation might discourage other pharmacies from taking the plunge.

South Bend native and local shutterbug Matt Knight captured this great moment with Patel. Her infectious smile shining through the camera’s lens, her long black hair framing her face just perfectly. This beautiful photograph is a testament to her fierce dedication to her craft. It further highlights the critical human element that is necessary in community health care.
