SUNOTEC Germany has some even cooler things to share!!! They have just received a contract from SEAC Group to start the first phase of the development for a battery energy storage system (BESS) program in Germany. This significant project is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s renewable energy capabilities and stabilizing its power grid.
Managing Director Christian Salzeder said they were excited about the company’s new direction. He stated, “The SEAC Group has entrusted us with the first phase of construction for this ambitious programme, marking an important milestone for SUNOTEC Germany in the large-scale battery storage segment.”
As such, the first phase of the new BESS program will deliver at least 20 MWh of storage capacity. This first deployment is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey. By 2028, we hope to get to a cumulative capacity of up to 230 MWh via four different phases. The third phase, still in development, is expected to augment that capacity with a whopping 30 MWh. We’re expecting a possible full funding grant agreement in the second quarter of 2026.
Next phases will be based on a number of considerations. These are all regulatory song and dance, market developments, and timely approvals for grid connection. SUNOTEC Germany has already taken concrete steps to improve its practices at home. This effort is in support of a much more ambitious European strategy to develop a large-scale energy storage infrastructure.
“Battery storage is a key enabler for a resilient and flexible energy system, and this partnership demonstrates how experienced industry players can jointly deliver solutions that support the long-term success of renewable energy,” added Salzeder.
Drawing from experience gained through their operations in Bulgaria, SUNOTEC designed and overseen development of utility-scale BESS projects. Now, the company’s hoping to use that expertise to improve grid performance and increase integration of renewable energy. That experience will be invaluable as Germany begins to scale energy storage into its changing energy future.
The initiative includes long-term, separate feasibility studies. If successful, these studies could unlock a possible final phase, providing a whopping additional 160 MWh of capacity. The outcome from these studies will make or break the project as it continues forward.
SUNOTEC Germany GmbH is an architectural partner of SEAC Group. They’re taking their show to new stages, by offering comprehensive services across development, engineering, construction, and operations for BESS infrastructure. This strategic partnership is a great example of just how important collaboration can be. Together, we can take energy storage solutions—critical to our sustainable future—over the finish line.
