Lestijärvi Wind Farm Transitions to New Ownership Amidst Finland’s Energy Revolution

OX2 recently finished the construction of the Lestijärvi wind farm, Finland’s largest energy project in decades. As the largest wind farm in the state, it includes 69 new, cutting-edge turbines with a capacity of 455.4 megawatts (MW). The donation has now officially been accepted by a consortium of municipal utilities with the members Oulun Energia, Kymppivoima, and Kuopion Energia. This handover will be an extraordinary shift in the country’s renewable energy trajectory.

Once fully completed, the Lestijärvi wind farm will produce more than 1.3 terawatt-hours annually. This contribution will represent almost 2% of Finland’s yearly electricity generation. When complete, this project will be responsible for up 1.6% of all Finland’s electricity production. It is an important move in furthering the country’s energy independence.

Despite the struggles, the consortium members are extremely hopeful that the long-term benefits will further justify the investment which is worth €650 million. The municipality hosting the wind farm anticipates receiving around €2.4 million ($2.8 million) each year in real estate tax revenue, further highlighting the project’s positive impact on the local economy.

The first transition of ownership was a notable technological achievement. Secondly, it points to a powerful desire among the public for more sustainability and renewable energy solutions. Anders Renvall, CEO of Kymppivoima, was optimistic about the long-term sustainability of the project, saying,

“The completion of Finland’s largest wind farm marks a milestone not only for OX2 but for the country’s energy transition.”

This shift highlights the role that domestic stakeholders play in pushing the Finnish government to lead the country into a sustainable energy future. The Lestijärvi wind farm promises to provide long-term benefits for society. It will be critical to achieving the nation’s renewable energy targets.

“The Lestijärvi wind farm provides its owners with a significant source of renewable energy for the next 35 years and supports the energy transition in Finland with its production.”

This transition reinforces the importance of domestic stakeholders in driving Finland towards a sustainable energy future. The Lestijärvi wind farm is poised to create long-term value for society and contribute significantly to the nation’s renewable energy goals.
