ContourGlobal is the first developer to commission a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bulgaria. This remarkable system has a total capacity of 500 MWh. This important milestone places the company and the region squarely at the leading edge of energy storage technologies.
The new stand-alone 202 megawatt (MW) BESS plant recently became operational. It is located right next door to the perimeter of the ME3 TPP coal-fired power plant that has severely polluted the Stara Zagora region. This region has long been the industrial and energy backbone of our state. It will further benefit from the plant’s proactive engagement in the day-ahead and intraday markets of Bulgaria’s national electricity market.
Additionally, the BESS facility occupies an equally stunning 25,000 square meters. It features some of the most advanced battery technology in the world, with 110 battery skids delivered by BYD. In addition, it houses 28 integrated power conversion systems and transformer units, maximizing operational efficiency.
In January 2025, ContourGlobal expanded its portfolio further by acquiring a 446 megawatt-peak solar photovoltaic portfolio in the United States. This acquisition supports the company’s strategic goal of strengthening its large-scale storage offerings in all markets and technologies.
ContourGlobal has a strong commitment to renewable energy. To double down on this commitment, the company is currently constructing a second 202 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the same site. As a result, this project will represent phase two of their ambitious endeavor to grow battery energy storage competencies in Bulgaria.
The project recently celebrated its completion with a bright commissioning ceremony. Among the dignitaries in attendance were ContourGlobal CEO Antonio Cammisecra, Bulgaria’s Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov, and the Deputy Mayor of Galabovo, Eng. Planen Barakova.
“We have built a sizeable presence in battery energy storage, with this project in Bulgaria representing a key contribution to our 3GWh gigawatt-hour portfolio of operating BESS projects.” – Antonio Cammisecra
This new facility’s commissioning will significantly increase the reliability and efficiency of the national grid. Its impact will be maximized during peak demand hours as the two remaining active coal-fired units at ME3 TPP operate and crank out electricity to shut down.
“The commercial operation of our 202MW/500MWh BESS plant represents a significant step forward for battery storage development in Bulgaria and underscores ContourGlobal’s ability to deliver large-scale storage solutions across different markets and technologies.” – Antonio Cammisecra
The commissioning of this facility is expected to significantly enhance the reliability and efficiency of the national grid, especially during peak demand periods when ME3 TPP’s two remaining active coal-fired units continue to supply electricity.
