By putting these pieces together, ContourGlobal has created a significant step forward in comprehensive energy storage solutions. They’ve successfully commissioned a 500 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bulgaria. In the region of Stara Zagora, this facility is now up and running. It’s in a great position to help transform the national electricity market.
The new stand-alone BESS plant has a jaw dropping capacity of 202 megawatts (MW). Nestled within the boundaries of the ME3 TPP coal-fired power plant, it occupies 25,000 square meters fabrika in color. The facility is designed to feature the most advanced battery technology, featuring 110 battery skids donated by BYD. It supports 28 integrated power conversion systems and transformer units.
Antonio Cammisecra, the recently appointed CEO of ContourGlobal, assumed control of the ceremonial commissioning. He was further accompanied by Bulgaria’s Minister of Energy, Zhecho Stankov and the Deputy Mayor of Galabovo, Eng. Cammisecra underscored the importance of this advance for the area’s energy future.
“The commercial operation of our 202MW/500MWh BESS plant represents a significant step forward for battery storage development in Bulgaria and underscores ContourGlobal’s ability to deliver large-scale storage solutions across different markets and technologies.” – Antonio Cammisecra
Together the BESS facility will participate proactively in both the day-ahead and intraday windows of the national electricity market. This pro-active engagement will increase the efficiency, stability and reliability of our energy supply. ContourGlobal is nearing completion on a second 202MW BESS on the same site as their operational plant. This undertaking is included in their proud expansion proposal.
Then, a month later in January 2025, ContourGlobal, the FTSE 250 U.K. This acquisition continues to cement the company’s focus and dedication to renewable energy solutions. The company’s active and announced projects underscore its strategic commitment to connecting and bringing together different energy technologies to help meet expanding energy needs.
ME3 TPP being one of the two active coal-fired units is carrying the load during the peak demand periods. This dependable electricity delivery benefits the whole region, as it transitions to cleaner, more renewable energy sources.
