Formosa 4 Wind Farm Receives Establishment Permit and Secures Long-Term Agreement

Synera development services has achieved a significant milestone in the realizing Formosa 4 offshore wind farm. The plant would be located 18-20 kilometers offshore from Miaoli County, Taiwan. The project has now received its final establishment permit, making it the first of all the round-one winners to reach this milestone. This construction permit, awarded in late 2024, paves the way for the installation of the wind farm and the eventual production of renewable energy.

Formosa 4 has a maximum potential capacity of 1,104 megawatts (MW). It’s a critical piece of the renewable energy puzzle in Taiwan. The wind farm is expected to produce enough clean energy for as many as 500,000 homes each year. This significant production is meant to help meet the surging corporate demand for green electricity from states throughout the Southeast.

Partnership with TSEE

Synera has successfully passed its proof of concept. Simultaneously, it signed a long term Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) with Taiwan’s TSEE. This settlement will enhance the financial underpinnings of the Formosa 4 project. Second, it responds to growing corporate stakeholders’ demand for renewable energy.

“Offshore wind is widely recognised as a critical source of large-scale, reliable clean energy. We are pleased to partner with TSEE. This mutually beneficial agreement provides long-term revenue certainty and strengthens Formosa 4’s financial foundation, while making stable, reliable renewable power accessible to a broader range of corporate offtakers. This is essential for these businesses to maintain operational resilience, enhance competitiveness, and progress toward their sustainability goals.” – Lucas Lin

This collaboration reflects a strategic move to ensure that the energy produced by Formosa 4 aligns with the sustainability objectives of various corporate entities in Taiwan.

Wind Turbine Installation

Siemens Gamesa will also provide 35 of its new, advanced 14 MW wind turbines. This decision will better enable the continued construction and development of the wind farm. Whether it’s on land or offshore, these innovative new turbines will be integral to efficiently capturing the power of the wind. Their installation is part of a broader initiative to enhance Taiwan’s renewable energy capabilities and contribute to the country’s climate goals.

The pledge to adopt the best available technology reflects a new direction towards more transparent and sustainable energy sources in Taiwan’s energy mix. The collaboration fosters the growth of Taiwan’s nascent offshore wind supply chain and establishes Taiwan as a regional leader in the development of the new offshore wind energy industry.

Future Prospects

The establishment permit for Formosa 4 is a significant step for Taiwan’s third-phase zonal development. Synera secured the project in 2022, winning it in the very first round of auctions held. As construction progresses, stakeholders anticipate that Formosa 4 will play a vital role in aiding Taiwan’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

The successful implementation of this project is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth within the region while contributing to global efforts aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
