BrightNight™ and Cordelio Power announce successful financial close on the Greenwater renewable energy storage project. This TIB project on rural SR 7 in Pierce County, Washington. This major announcement will be a huge step forward for the winning companies. It amplifies their work to push the region toward more reliable and cleaner energy solutions. The project as a whole includes a 200MW lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) that will improve the grid’s capacity and resilience.
Greenwater energy storage project interconnection to the grid via a limited length tie line. This line connects directly into the White River substation. The project would help deliver important grid services to utility giant Puget Sound Energy (PSE), helping the state of Washington decarbonize its energy supply. With project financing approaching $400 million including public and private sources. Together, this initiative is primed to transform the Pacific Northwest’s energy infrastructure into a more innovative, reliable and integrated system.
Commitment to Clean Energy
Both BrightNight and Cordelio Power are focused on bringing innovative new clean energy solutions to market, and the Greenwater project does just that. This is their first jointly owned asset in the Pacific Northwest to reach financial close. It’s the story of a remarkable partnership focused on executing their vision of a sustainable, reliable transportation future.
Construction and commissioning of the fast-track project are currently ongoing. Our target now is to hit the commercial operation date they’ve outlined for early next year. As an example, the Greenwater project includes a robust emergency management and safety plan. It prioritizes low-impact siting, minimizes on-site traffic impacts, and requires complete site restoration after decommissioning.
“Greenwater is a strong example of how BrightNight and Cordelio Power are partnering to advance reliable, clean energy solutions that strengthen the grid and support the transition to a low-carbon future.” – Chris Hind, Cordelio Power CEO
Modernizing the Grid
The Greenwater energy storage project represents a major step forward in modernizing and hardening the grid in the Pacific Northwest. The role of energy is shifting like never before. Projects like Greenwater show us the potential for battery storage, digital innovations, and smart partnerships to deliver enormous amounts of reliable clean energy.
Martin Hermann, BrightNight’s CEO, noted the importance of this announcement. He said that it exemplifies the amazing feats of what bipartisanship can achieve in reshaping our energy future.
“Greenwater represents a major step forward for modernising and hardening the grid in the Pacific Northwest. This project demonstrates how storage, digital innovation, and trusted partnerships can deliver dependable clean energy at scale.” – Martin Hermann, BrightNight CEO
Future Outlook
BrightNight and Cordelio Power are collaborating to launch the Greenwater energy storage project to help fortify the local grid. They want to create a model for future clean energy state-led initiatives. By February 2025, the partners signed a virtual power purchase agreement with Arizona Public Service. This new step deepens their dedication to providing clean energy solutions to all areas—rural and urban—following their initial progress with Greenwater.
Though in the early stages of development, stakeholders are hopeful that the project will have a positive ripple effect on Washington’s energy landscape. The Greenwater energy storage project will be critical to fulfilling future energy demand. It requires president to prioritize environmental sustainability.
