ACCIONA Energía Divests Stakes in South African Renewable Projects to Cennergi

ACCIONA Energía has reached the decision to divest its interests in two of its largest renewable energy facilities. These assets are located here, within South Africa. The company is at the forefront of sustainable energy technologies. Via its subsidiary, ACCIONA Energía Internacional, it owns a 55% share of the Gouda Wind Farm and the Sishen Photovoltaic Plant. This strategic move follows ACCIONA’s continued multifaceted portfolio management during the last year.

The Gouda wind farm, which has been in operation since 2015, has a capacity of 138 megawatts (MW). The Sishen photovoltaic power plant, in the Northern Cape, has been operational since 2014. Its installed capacity is 94 megawatt-peak (MWp). Together, these projects have a net generating capacity of 232 MW. The decision to divest is based on ACCIONA’s ongoing strategy to optimize its investments in renewable energy.

Details of the Transaction

ACCIONA Energía has formally made the decision to divest from its equity interests in three renewable energy projects. Cennergi, also a subsidiary of Exxaro Resources, will be the off-taker. The enterprise value of the transaction is €255 million (about $295.36 million). This transaction should produce a capital gain of around €65 million for ACCIONA Energía. This will make the company’s financial foundation even stronger.

The deal is expected to close in 2026, subject to usual regulatory approvals. Since that time, ACCIONA has acquired a 70 percent interest in the project. The remaining equity shareholders, including AXA, Bestinver Infra FCR, Royal Bafokeng Holdings, Soul City and Community Trust own different percentages in the Gouda wind farm and the Sishen photovoltaic plant.

Continuing Commitment to Renewable Energy

This divestment should not be interpreted as a sign of decreased commitment by ACCIONA to renewable energy. In fact, the company has recently signed contracts to sell more than 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity. This exciting new development has reached Costa Rica, Spain, and Peru. Their combined value amounts to more than €2 billion. This milestone underscores ACCIONA’s deep commitment to growing its worldwide renewable energy presence.

The sale of assets like the Gouda wind farm and Sishen photovoltaic plant allows ACCIONA to reinvest capital into new projects that align with its long-term sustainability goals. We believe this strategic repositioning will better position the company to be a leader in the rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
