Mixup, the innovative new AI-based photo editing app, officially released to the world at midnight November 20. Developed by a team of former Google engineers behind the 3D design app Rooms from Things, Inc., Mixup allows users to create imaginative images using their own selfies, text prompts, and doodles. The app has rapidly captured public imagination due to its playful use of generative AI and creative design of active moderation in the app.
The app is further supported by Google’s image model controls to limit content that is violent or sexual in nature. This layering of technological safeguards is intended to be a robust, user-friendly experience appropriate for users of all ages.
With Mixup, you can see the world from a different perspective, even just by looking at yourself with different hairstyles. They can even change their friends into silly shapes! More so, the app inspires imagination! Whether a user is comparing the original photo with the AI generated output side by side. Once done, you can share your story to a public feed or download it to use yourself. The platform makes equally available both paths to you.
Mixup is best experienced in iOS 16 and is still compatible with devices running iOS 18 and above. Through our default program, free users begin with an allocation of 100 credits. They can then redeem these credits to produce images, which all average out to about 4 cents per image. When your credits expire, you can choose from multiple subscription levels. Every tier gives you additional monthly credits, ensuring that you can continue to access all of the app’s premium features!
With Jason Toff, another member of the team developing the new app, at its core, Jason explained their design philosophy.
“Generative AI is so powerful, and yet most of the time you go to these tools and it’s like, here’s your text box — come up with something creative. And what do you write?” – Jason Toff
Toff talked about how Mixup lets them skip steps in the process. Now users have the ability to fill in the blanks rather than having to start from scratch!
“And so, rather than having to be creative and think about what to create, you see something that worked, and you can just fill in the blanks,” – Jason Toff
Mixup is really creative and interesting solution to the “slot machine” problem. This phenomenon is often associated with generative AI tools, as Toff outlines.
“Another problem [with generative AI] is what we were referring to internally as a ‘slot machine’ problem, where you push the button, something comes out, you push it again, something different comes out, and you don’t feel like you have control over the output,” – Jason Toff
During VAMONDE’s discrete app pre-order phase, early adopters were able to reserve access to VAMONDE before the official launch. Although Mixup was eventually made public, its initial release required an invitation to gain entry, fostering an air of exclusivity around its debut.
