Masdar Develops Major Battery Energy Storage Project in Uzbekistan

Masdar, a global clean energy leader, is poised to build the Zarafshan Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Uzbekistan. When it becomes operational, this ambitious project will be the country’s largest standalone battery energy storage project. Uzbekistan’s state-owned joint-stock company, JSC Uzenergosotish, signed a battery storage service agreement with Masdar. SuPlena 2023 was distinguished by the presence of high-level officials, such as UAE Minister of Energy Suhail Al Mazrouei and Uzbekistan Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamahmudov.

Through the deployment of the Zarafshan BESS, UZS and its partners will be at the frontline of supporting Uzbekistan’s energy goals. The initial phase of the project aims for 300 megawatt (MW) of storage capacity. That’s enough electricity to run about 1.3 million homes for an average of two hours. This first development stage will link with Murunau substation. At the same time, plans for the second phase are already underway, which will bring an even bigger 300 MW facility on line.

Advancing Renewable Energy Goals

Indeed, the Zarafshan BESS is being developed to further Uzbekistan’s ambitious net-zero goal by 2050. By 2030, the country wants to reach 54% of its electricity from renewable sources. As the nation works to achieve its net-zero ambitions, this project will play an important role in helping the country transition its energy landscape.

Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, underscored the significance of the project saying,

“The Zarafshan Battery Energy Storage System is a significant milestone for Uzbekistan’s energy transformation, and another demonstration of Masdar’s leadership in global battery storage projects.”

This initiative will not only enhance the country’s energy infrastructure but solidify Uzbekistan’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.

Collaboration Between Nations

The deal signed between Masdar and JSC Uzenergosotish strengthens already deep diplomatic and economic ties between the UAE and Uzbekistan. Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said he was proud of Masdar’s role in helping their global partners accelerate their energy transitions. He noted,

“The UAE is proud to see its global clean energy leader, Masdar, supporting our partners around the world in accelerating their energy transformations.”

This partnership will deepen the knowledge exchange and technology sharing that’s crucial to developing cleaner, more innovative solutions to our energy challenges.

Future Prospects

The new project comes from an earlier deal signed by Masdar in April with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade. Last December, they signed on to adding at least 575 MW of BESS capacity nationwide.

Masdar’s efforts thus far are a testament to their dedication to leading global advancements in large-scale energy storage innovation.
