Masdar and OMV Collaborate to Establish Major Green Hydrogen Plant in Austria

Under Masdar’s leadership, the UAE has taken commendable steps toward renewable energy projects. For additional context, they recently won contracts for 2 solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in Saudi Arabia that will have a combined capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). Masdar has observed a rapidly growing interest in the development of green hydrogen. Together, they will jointly build and operate a new green hydrogen facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. Our partnership is designed to help realize the promise of green hydrogen. It is a critical element of a larger effort to increase energy cooperation between the UAE and Austria.

The signing ceremony for the plant agreement took place on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference. This virtual event highlighted the importance of this venture to both the US and global energy landscape. The new manufacturing facility will have an expected capacity of 140 megawatts (MW). Once completed, it will be one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen production sites. Construction was scheduled to start in September 2025, with the facility projected to come online commercially by 2027. The joint venture is expected to close in early 2026, pending required approvals and regulatory clearing.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

Masdar and OMV’s partnership will set us on a path to invest in promising green hydrogen ventures. In addition, they’ll look at ways to produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuels and synthetic chemicals. Their work will go well beyond the borders of Austria, towards Central and Northern Europe as well as the UAE. This collaboration marks an important milestone for Masdar. The strategy supports the company’s ambition to be a top three global producer of green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2030.

Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, underscored the importance of this partnership. He stated,

“This landmark partnership with OMV marks an important step in expanding Masdar’s green hydrogen footprint in Europe and strengthening the energy collaboration between the UAE and Austria. By combining Masdar’s global expertise in developing and scaling clean energy projects with OMV’s strong industrial and technological capabilities, this joint venture will accelerate the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries and advance the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy in Europe.”

Commitment to Renewable Energy

The joint venture between Masdar and OMV further underscores both parties’ commitments to pushing renewable energy solutions forward. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Masdar’s chair and the UAE’s minister of industry and advanced technology, noted the Emirates’ deep commitment to collaborative work with partners around the world. He stated,

“The UAE has a longstanding commitment to working with our partners to accelerate the global energy systems transformation. This joint venture unites Masdar’s two decades of renewable energy leadership with OMV’s industrial capability, paving the way for future commercial opportunities across Europe. Today’s agreement also underscores the deep and growing collaboration between the UAE and Austria in powering growth for the information age.”

Masdar just recently won contracts for large, utility-scale solar projects in Saudi Arabia as well as a big, green hydrogen facility in Austria. These steps go a long way to not just increasing its footprint, but progressing sustainability and aiding in the energy transition.

Strategic Vision for 2030

Masdar’s strategic vision focuses on being one of the world’s leaders in green hydrogen production by 2030. The company will soon begin to shift its efforts to developing a pipeline of commercial projects. Simultaneously, it aims to establish agile, scalable, and flexible platforms to address primary markets globally. By incubating their respective offerings jointly, OMV and this partnership will significantly amplify this vision. By combining the two companies’ existing leadership in renewable energy, …
