Mitsubishi Power and JEL to Launch Landmark CCGT Power Plant in Singapore

Mitsubishi Power’s premium quality CCGT power plant and industry-leading technology will help not just JEL, but the environment as well! This cutting-edge project will be home on Jurong Island, Singapore. This facility will only come online in 2029. As the largest offshore wind farm in the country — with a capacity of 670 megawatts (MW), this project marks a historic breakthrough in the nation’s energy landscape.

Completion of the new power plant will fundamentally improve Singapore’s electricity supply management. Perhaps most importantly, it will do so in direct response to the evolving needs and demands of the grid. The plant’s output is slated to provide electricity for more than 965,000 typical four-room apartments. This would go a long way toward helping the energy burden of a disproportionate share of the U.S. population.

Innovative Energy Solutions

Beyond being one of the cleanest power plants in the world, it has a very special characteristic—it includes a unique large-scale BESS. As such, it becomes the first CCGT unit to reach this milestone. This cutting-edge addition boasts the plant’s expanded capacity to store and distribute electricity. This way, it can better react to changes in energy consumption throughout the day.

The facility is designed to accommodate hydrogen-ready gas turbines. The plant will operate with a blend of 30% hydrogen. It’s able to convert to 100% hydrogen down the line. This flexibility helps facilitate Singapore’s bold target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It represents a historic breakthrough in large-scale clean energy generation.

“This project represents a significant leap forward in PacificLight’s decarbonisation journey and our commitment to powering Singapore with cleaner, more resilient energy.” – PLP CEO Yu Tat Ming

Efficiency and Reliability

The plant operates on a CCGT model recognized for its outstanding efficiency as the world’s best large-frame gas turbine. It adds an impressive 64% combined cycle efficiency. This increased efficiency lowers their operational costs while decreasing their environmental footprint. In addition, the model has achieved more than three million hours of proven operational reliability, attesting to its effectiveness and durability.

The carefully planned and executed implementation of this project reinforces Mitsubishi Power’s dedication to bringing the most sophisticated technological solutions to bear in pursuit of energy transformation goals. The Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the power plant is now formally signed. This milestone clears the way for the construction to get started in the coming weeks!

“Mitsubishi Power is honoured to partner JEL to build PLP’s monumental project that would support Singapore’s growing electricity needs and broader energy transition goals.” – Mitsubishi Power executive vice-president Daichi Nakajima

A Sustainable Future

This is no ordinary power plant. As a whole, it represents Singapore’s forward-thinking energy management strategy manifest in its dedication to hydrogen integration. The integration of renewable energy sources with traditional power generation methods positions the nation as a leader in sustainable energy practices.
