TED’s Visionary Leader Chris Anderson Reflects on a Legacy of Optimism and Innovation

That’s only half true Chris Anderson, the 68-year-old head of TED, is incurably optimistic. Most importantly, he believes in technology’s incredible potential to make our lives better. Under Ted’s leadership, the event has transformed from a small gathering of 500 attendees to an international global phenomenon. These days, it’s broadcasting that inspiration in new ways from animated lessons to podcasts. As Anderson gets ready to leave his post, he’s leaving on a high note. He has faith that we can collectively invent a better future and prioritizes innovation as our best means to address society’s most pressing challenges.

Anderson assumed control of TED 25 years ago when the internet was in its infancy. In the imagination of his brief, brilliant life, an open Web where all ideas could be shared freely and widely. He did an incredibly audacious thing by putting TED talks online for free. Many expressed concern that this decision would erode the conference’s exclusivity. He now sees this decision as pivotal in expanding TED’s reach.

“It’s completely thrilling seeing that TED didn’t just have to be for 500 people—it could be for many millions of people,” – Chris Anderson.

A New Era for TED

Anderson’s lasting influence on TED can be seen in his creation of the TEDx program. This effort has given local communities resources to hold their own local events. As part of this effort, this initiative has brought some amazing young innovators into the fold via a fellowship program to help develop their talent and maximize the global effect of their innovative ideas.

At MoMA, Anderson wanted to create a place where creativity could thrive — a crucial outlet to develop during such difficult times. He even names Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, as the perfect successor to steer TED into this exciting new future. His trust in Khan embodies his faith in cutting edge educational innovation to cultivate a better tomorrow.

“Conversations about possibility, about what we can build together, have always been at the heart of TED,” – Chris Anderson.

Anderson has taken TED’s distribution further, scaling up the organization’s live engagements and amplifying its digital initiatives. He conceived of TED’s Audacious Project, which funds big initiatives that aim to make the world sustainable and equitable. The cumulative impact of this project has produced more than $3 billion in economic and artistic ventures, TED’s dedication to social good in action.

The Challenge of Technology

In portraying the transformative potential of new technology, Anderson doesn’t shy away from telling the other side of the social media story. He identifies it as “the single biggest contributor to our dysfunction” and highlights how it can amplify negative behaviors among users.

“Whereas social media often helps people become their worst selves,” – Chris Anderson.

Specifically, he contends that algorithms create an atmosphere of fear-inducing terror. This fear and paranoia forces us to see one another as possible threats rather than potential friends and family. Anderson argues that in order to counter this dangerous trend, we need to have more conversations centered on possibility and collaboration.

“It’s probably what the world needs now more than ever; it’s the antidote to people throwing barbs at each other,” – Chris Anderson.

Even with these struggles, he has an unwaveringly positive outlook on technology, even artificial intelligence. He is passionate about using AI the right way to help people achieve their absolute best selves.

“You could argue that AI used right is capable of helping people become their best selves,” – Chris Anderson.

Looking Ahead

Now, as Anderson gets ready to step down from his creative leadership role at TED, he looks back on his own path with appreciation. And he has a great sense of how strong first feelings are when someone joins an organization. It was like returning home to a community equally passionate about daring to imagine what may be possible.

“I felt I’d come home to that heroic group of people dreaming about the future and what the future could be,” – Chris Anderson.

With his departure, it will be the new leadership of TED that defines its trajectory as it continues to grow and evolve. The firm’s dedication to exchange ideas and inspire change is still very much alive. Anderson’s legacy will deeply influence TED’s future. The organization looks forward to continuing to find creative ways to engage audiences from around the globe.
