Apple Expands Renewable Energy Initiatives with Major Projects Across Europe

Apple Inc. continues to advance its commitment to sustainability with significant renewable energy projects in Europe, reinforcing its ambitious “Apple 2030” goal of carbon neutrality. In fact, the international tech giant just announced that it will buy electricity from a 110 megawatt (MW) solar farm in Greece. This decision should accelerate renewable energy deployment throughout eastern European electrical grids.

Apple is not only supporting this Greek solar endeavor. The company is keeping busy, continually investing in an impressive portfolio of renewable energy projects across Italy and Poland. You are financing a 129MW portfolio of wind and solar projects in Italy. Further on, you invest in a 40MW solar power plant in Poland. Together, these projects will produce more than one million megawatt-hours (MWh) of new clean electricity. By 2030, Apple’s products will be powered by this renewable energy.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Apple’s “Apple 2030” vision signifies its dedication to achieving carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain and product life cycle by the end of this decade. What’s needed is Apple’s new initiative to make its devices’ charging and operating carbon footprint near-zero. As of 2024, this process represented about 29% of the company’s overall scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, stated, “By 2030, we want our users to know that all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity.” This commitment highlights the company’s mission to continue providing sustainable solutions while tackling climate change.

Expanding Renewable Energy Capacity

The recently announced renewable energy projects in Europe are positioned to continue having a profound effect on the continent’s energy landscape. Apple’s initiatives are expected to contribute approximately 3,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually to the grid by 2030. Beyond feeding the beast I often need to remind people that these efforts primarily power Apple operations. They’re essential to fostering walkable communities and dynamic economies throughout Europe.

Alongside these ventures in Greece, Italy, and Poland, Apple has recently opened a solar array in Spain. This action represents the latest step in the company’s long-term plan to improve sustainable practices. These recent expansions are a continuation of Apple’s leadership on sustainability and energy security throughout its global supply chain and operations.

“Our new projects in Europe will help us achieve our ambitious Apple 2030 goal, while contributing to healthy communities, thriving economies, and secure energy sources across the continent.” – Lisa Jackson

A Sustainable Future

As Apple forges ahead with its renewable energy initiatives, the company emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in its operations. Building large-scale solar and wind projects is one piece of creating a better, cleaner world. Beyond that, it displays an impressive demonstration of environmental stewardship.
