EWEC Launches Ambitious Zarraf Solar PV Project to Boost Abu Dhabi’s Renewable Energy Capacity

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) on Thursday announced the opening of the Emirate’s new Zarraf Solar PV independent power producer project. This initiative represents a high water mark on Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy trajectory. This ambitious project just started its bidding process in January. It will feature just under three million solar panels, helping EWEC achieve its aim of increasing the emirate’s solar power generation to 18GW by 2035.

Today, the Zarraf Solar PV project is partners with ENGIE, a global leader in low-carbon energy solutions, and Masdar, an international renewable energy company and catalyst for local investment. In partnership, the three organizations are devoted to accelerating the UAE’s transition to a sustainable energy future. Once operational, the plant will produce enough electricity to power around 160,000 homes across the UAE.

Project Overview and Impact

The Zarraf Solar PV project is a significant technological and advancement. Yet it’s no accident that the plan strategically zeros in on one of the deepest possible cuts to Abu Dhabi’s carbon emissions. The plant is slated to reduce carbon emissions by more than 2.4 million tons per year. This deep cut is emblematic of its central part in the region’s war against climate change.

This collaborative approach between EWEC, ENGIE, and Masdar is an example of a shared commitment toward innovation and driving the world toward a sustainable future. We’re thrilled to be deepening our long-standing partnership with EWEC Masdar. Collectively, they’re rewriting the story of how the UAE generates and uses energy.

“Masdar is proud to collaborate with EWEC and ENGIE on this gigawatt-scale project, which will support the UAE’s clean energy journey,” said Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi. “This iconic solar project will support that transformation while creating opportunities for sustainable socioeconomic growth.”

Timeline and Financial Closure

Funding for the overall project has been secured, and the project’s schedule calls for financial closure expected by the end of 2025’s fourth quarter. This milestone is very important. This will clear the way for actual construction and let the large solar generating facility get started through an operating power facility. By accomplishing this goal, stakeholders seek to be in agreement with international best practices associated with renewable energy projects.

Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, CEO of Al Wathba, stressed the importance of the Khazna Solar PV project in this respect.

“Khazna Solar PV, our fourth world-leading utility-scale solar project, is a strategic asset that significantly accelerates our journey towards achieving the UAE’s renewable energy targets.”

Future Implications

The UAE’s impressive progress on renewable energy Commercial operations Projects such as the Zarraf Solar PV project will be key to supporting their national intentions and global commitments towards improving sustainable development. Major stakeholders across the energy landscape—including military planners—are working together to increase clean energy capacity. This partnership improves mobility and fosters economic development within the rapidly growing corridor.

This project will significantly strengthen Abu Dhabi’s energy infrastructure. In doing so, it will create a powerful example for upcoming renewable energy projects across the UAE and the world.
