Sora, the latest AI application, has rapidly ascended to the top of the U.S. App Store, achieving a remarkable milestone by surpassing one million downloads faster than its predecessor, ChatGPT. Sora just released wide in the US and Canada. In fact, within just its first week, it soared to an incredible 627,000 downloads, per data from Appfigures. This accomplishment makes Sora a major player in a competitive field of AI powered applications.
The app had a truly meteoric launch, rocketing to No. 1 on the U.S. App Store within hours of its release. On just its first day, Sora achieved 56,000 iOS app installs. By October 1, 2025, daily downloads reached a staggering 107,800. The momentum held all week, daily installs peaking at 98,500 on Wednesday and dipping to 84,400 at the lowest.
ChatGPT only released 606k downloads in its first week though it was limited to just the U.S. Indeed, compared to ChatGPT and other major AI launches, Sora’s performance drastically outpaced those programs. Yet Anthropic’s Claude or Microsoft’s Copilot haven’t been able to receive anywhere near the same adoption.
Canada also was key to Sora’s success, providing just under 45,000 installs. Sora’s launch would have accounted for over 96% of ChatGPT’s initial impact, even if we only looked at U.S. data. This is a testament to its considerable allure to users across North America.
Remarkably, by October 3, Sora had rocketed to the No. 3 spot on the App Store. It paved the way for its market dominance along with other huge AI products such as xAI’s Grok. The opening was a classic case of machine of marketing firepower. At the same time, consumer demand for AI technologies boom.
As Sora attract more and more attention and downloads, industry analysts will be watching its course with great interest. Its meteoric rise is a testament to the appetite for AI-based technologies.
