Perplexity Unveils Free Comet Browser and New Features for Users

Perplexity, a new but quickly rising AI search startup, recently went public with their new Comet browser. Now we’re thrilled to announce that users around the world can freely access it! This initiative makes Comet a direct challenger to the world’s largest web browsers and search engines. The browser first launched three months ago. It was only available to paid subscribers of Perplexity’s Max plan, which costs $200-per-month—creating massive buzz and intrigue.

Since its full public launch earlier this year, Comet has attracted millions of users who have waited in line to download Comet. This sudden interest showcases just how competitive and eager the market for innovative solutions has become in respect to the browser and search engine market. Perplexity wants to catch that momentum by releasing Comet as free to Comet. This policy change increases its user base and puts it into direct competition with the more dominant players in the industry.

Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity, shared out some of these new developments on a recent episode of our So What? With such a powerful feature, users can switch seamlessly from task to task while utilizing Comet to its full potential. As one company spokesperson recently disclosed, the background assistant provides “an army of assistants at your disposal.” This game-changing feature simplifies dozens of processes directly from your browser.

The background assistant is currently available to select paid subscribers, enhancing their experience with high-performing AI models and Perplexity’s email assistant. Users who subscribe to the Max plan will automatically unlock the Comet Plus, which enhances their browsing experience even more.

Perplexity’s strategy to offer a free version of Comet alongside premium subscription options reflects a growing trend among technology companies to attract a broader audience while still providing advanced features for committed users. By aligning itself in contrast to big players like Chrome and Edge, Perplexity could create a strong opportunity to entirely redefine the search engine space.
