O Mon 4 Power Plant to Boost Vietnam’s Energy Security with New Gas Turbines

Mitsubishi Power has secured a significant contract to supply advanced gas turbines for the O Mon 4 Power Plant in Vietnam, a project integral to the nation’s energy transition. Unit O Mon 4 has a designed capacity of 1,155 megawatts (MW). It is key to the Block B – O Mon gas-to-power project chain, Vietnam’s number one national priority, aimed at deepening Vietnam’s energy security. Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group project, also called Petrovietnam Their project. It is scheduled to operate as a key provider of firm electricity needed for grid stability in the Mekong Delta.

The O Mon 4 plant will deploy Mitsubishi Power’s M701JAC gas turbines. These turbines have an exceptional combined cycle efficiency of over 64% and have accumulated over three million operational hours, demonstrating their reliability. This state-of-the-art technology aligns with Vietnam’s aspirations for sustainable and smart energy development. It allows Petrovietnam to increase its total installed capacity to more than 9.3 gigawatts (GW), representing around 10% of the national power system.

Project Details and Development Partners

A consortium of JGC Corporation and Vietnam’s Lilama Corporation won the engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the O Mon 4 plant. In this group are South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility and Vietnam’s Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2. We’re really looking forward to delivering the project in partnership with CTCI Corporation. This influential engineering and construction giant is located in Taiwan.

The O Mon 4 plant will have a total capacity of 2.8 GW when all units are fully operational. Thank you for helping us to dramatically strengthen our national energy grid. The project’s completion is anticipated by 2028, marking a substantial milestone in Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources and improve reliability.

Importance of the O Mon 4 Plant

The O Mon 4 plant will be a crucial linchpin in Vietnam’s energy transition. The plan is to phase out the country’s dependence on coal and by 2050 make up 80 percent of its energy with renewables. This facility is part of the Block B – O Mon gas-to-power project chain. It will double energy efficiency and sustainability in the region.

Akihiro Ondo, Mitsubishi Power Asia-Pacific CEO and managing director, emphasized the significance of this project:

“The O Mon 4 project marks a milestone in Vietnam’s energy journey, and we are honoured to contribute our state-of-the-art JAC gas turbines to this key power plant. Building on our proven track record across Asia, we are committed to delivering world-class reliability and performance for O Mon 4, working together with our partners.”

Future Prospects

Vietnam is advancing energy security and sustainable development.

the O Mon 4 Power Plant There’s no better example of the country’s determination to modernize its energy infrastructure than Vietnam’s giant new power plant, O Mon 4. By integrating advanced technologies such as the M701JAC gas turbines, Vietnam aims not only to meet current demands but to pave the way for future growth in its energy sector.
