Hultsfred Solar Farm Launches as Sweden’s Renewable Energy Milestone

With the recent inauguration of its 3.5 MW solar park, located in picturesque Hultsfred, Sweden, the country has made history by opening its largest such facility to date. The Hultsfred solar park, a joint project of Neoen and Alight, has an excellent capacity of 100 megawatt-peak (MWp). Through this project we are committed to providing sustainable energy solutions. The H&M Group recently committed to procure around half of their total energy consumption from this plant.

Neoen, a French renewable energy company, is the majority owner of the Hultsfred solar farm. Neoen has now officially opened its fourth operational asset in Sweden. This adds up to the company’s aggregate capacity to a remarkable 304 MW when counting all of its projects. The solar farm will produce approximately 100 GWh of clean energy annually. That’s the equivalent of providing clean power to over 18,000 Swedish homes!

Renewable Energy Commitment

In addition to its local importance, the Hultsfred solar farm is one of the newest and most important pieces in H&M Group’s long-term sustainability strategy. In 2022, H&M made an impressive move to publicly sign a power purchase agreement. This agreement guarantees that 95% of the company’s renewable energy will originate from Hultsfred by 2030. This partnership underscores the importance of collaboration between corporate entities and renewable energy providers, highlighting how businesses can transition towards greener practices.

The construction phase of the solar farm not only supports renewable energy initiatives but contributed significantly to local employment. This multi-use project created an estimated 120 construction jobs. It powered up the local economy and reinforced a national focus on sustainable energy within Sweden.

Investment and Collaborative Efforts

Since the start of 2020 Neoen has invested almost €200 million ($233.1 million) in wind and solar projects throughout Sweden. Sharing ownership at the Hultsfred solar farm Hultsfred is part of a larger portfolio. Included in this portfolio are the Storbränkullen wind farm and the Storen and Isbillen Power Reserves. French and Swedish companies were heavily involved at nearly every level of the project. Their joint effort truly represents the teamwork and attitude that helps accelerate renewable energy projects.

The development process for Hultsfred was marked by intricate ownership structures, electricity offtake agreements, and construction responsibilities shared between multiple actors. This multifaceted approach ensured that the solar farm not only meets current energy demands but positions itself for future growth and sustainability.

A Step Towards Sustainability

The inauguration of the Hultsfred solar farm is another step in Sweden’s long-term transition to a more sustainable society. By integrating large-scale renewable energy solutions into its infrastructure, Sweden continues to set an example for other nations looking to reduce their carbon footprints.
