JEA Moves Forward with $1.57 Billion Natural Gas Facility in Jacksonville

Instead, the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) is doubling down and proceeding with plans to construct a new combined cycle natural gas facility. Together with JEA’s investments, this project will increase energy reliability in northeast Florida. The authority plans on replacing the ageing Northside Generation Station Unit 3. After 48 years, this station has proven service to the community. In a unanimous vote, the JEA board approved the project, which will need a $1.57 billion investment.

The new facility is expected to produce as much as 675 megawatts of energy. This capacity can power the homes of almost 300,000 Americans. As for housing demand, the region’s population has increased at a breakneck pace. This important project addresses increasing energy needs and allows JEA to continue providing safe, reliable service to its diverse customer base. The currently operating Northside Generation Station Unit 3 is committed to retirement by 2031.

Enhancing System Reliability

The new combined cycle natural gas facility will increase the efficiency of gas by 30%. This upgrade will be a monumental step up from the performance of the decrepit, old unit. This major upgrade is projected to greatly improve system reliability for JEA’s customers, who rely on a reliable flow of power.

Board member Joseph DiSalvo stressed the need to get on with building this particular connection.

“We have to be able to deliver reliable energy to everyone, all JEA customers. The risk is unacceptable if we punt combined cycle down the road. My personal view is that the risk isn’t worth it.” – Joseph DiSalvo

The opening of this new logistics facility is a key part of JEA’s journey to transforming its infrastructure. It extends further exemplifies our deep, continuous commitment to adapt to the changing needs of the community.

Collaboration with GE Vernova

JEA’s CEO & Managing Director, Vickie Cavey has been given approval to work out a final deal with GE Vernova. She needs to sign this agreement by August 31, 2025. This agreement will guarantee JEA’s place in the manufacturer’s production schedule – vital to keep the project on a timely course.

JEA partners with GE Vernova to research innovation and invest in new technology. This unique partnership expands the operational capacity of CFD’s new facility. JEA is building the future of energy generation with innovative solutions. It’s a laudable goal to try to develop an expedited process that balances economic and environmental priorities.

Addressing Growing Energy Requirements

Northeast Florida’s growing demand for energy will require utilities such as JEA to take initiative and act responsibly. The proposed facility represents a more intelligent approach to the energy demands of today and in the future. It sets itself up for the future as the region continues to grow.

By investing in reliable and efficient infrastructure, JEA not only prepares for population growth but positions itself as a leader in sustainable energy practices. The authority has a goal of phasing out these older units. They can’t afford to keep these outdated facilities and continue serving their customers with cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions they expect as consumers.
