Hai Long Offshore Wind Project Marks Major Progress in Taiwan’s Renewable Energy Goals

Taiwan’s Hai Long offshore wind project just cleared a huge hurdle! Century Wind Power CEAA has completed successful delivery of 21 wind turbine jacket foundations. These foundations stand over 90 meters tall and each weighs nearly 2,000 metric tonnes. They are a key part of helping construct Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm, which will have more than 1 gigawatt (GW) of capacity. This achievement not only underscores the project’s advancement but highlights Taiwan’s growing expertise in offshore wind manufacturing.

The Hai Long project thus far became the first offshore wind farm in Taiwan delivering green electricity to Taipower’s grid in June 2025. It is striving for 100 percent grid-connected by 2026. Once operational, the project will produce enough clean energy to serve over one million households in Taiwan. This effort dovetails nicely with the administration’s pledge to boost renewables and cut carbon emissions.

Partnership and Innovation

Century Wind Power and the Hai Long project have benefited from a strong and collaborative partnership. Their initial collaboration came when they executed the jacket fabrication contract at the end of 2022. More recently, this collaboration has been key to keeping timely momentum on the project. In order to improve the construction process, they developed a state-of-the-art hydraulic gripper system that was built into the jacket fabrication. This system is important to obtain the most accurate alignment possible and construction stability. Tim Kittelhake, the CEO and project director of Hai Long, emphasized the importance of this collaboration:

“Our collaboration with Century Wind Power has been essential to the project’s progress and is a testament to the strength and reliability of Taiwan’s local supply chain. It also demonstrates that Taiwan is capable of supporting the nation’s offshore wind ambitions and continues to attract investment in complex, large-scale infrastructure.” – Tim Kittelhake, Hai Long CEO and project director.

This unique partnership strengthens the project’s technical capacity. It further strengthens the local economy with more than 500 additional jobs and skills-building opportunities in the growing offshore wind industry.

Future Outlook

In August 2024, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs awarded five wind farm projects totaling 2.7 GW during its latest round of offshore auctions. The Hai Long project is a solid example of Taiwan’s dedication to developing and growing its renewable energy resources. With successful delivery of jacket foundations, the country is highly optimized to deliver on ambitious offshore wind projects.

Moreover, more than 20 personnel from the Hai Long project provided on-site support across various critical areas, reinforcing the collaborative effort required for such an ambitious undertaking. Taiwan has been bullish on developing its offshore wind infrastructure. Developments such as Hai Long are leading the charge for a new energy economy and attracting significant local and international investment.
