Oklo and Atomic Alchemy Selected for US DoE Reactor Pilot Projects

Oklo, an innovative nuclear technology startup company, was awarded the opportunity to develop three reactor pilot projects. This new opportunity is thanks to the United States Department of Energy’s recently introduced Reactor Pilot Programme, including its subprogram Atomic Alchemy.NEI Along with congressional support, this initiative is working towards achieving criticality in at least three test reactors by July 2026. This milestone will coincide with the 250th birthday of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence.

The Department of Energy (DoE) has selected Oklo for two projects, and Atomic Alchemy for one. This new selection is just the latest in a series of large initiatives intended to drive innovation in the nuclear space. It underscores the urgent need to get critical infrastructure back online, including the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan. The Palisades plant has the potential to become the first commercial nuclear reactor in the U.S. to resume operations following decommissioning.

A New Era for Nuclear Innovation

Jacob DeWitte, co-founder and CEO of Oklo, told the Instream story that the company takes great pride in having been selected for such consequential projects. He stated,

“We’re proud to be selected by the DOE for these three projects. This shows that the DoE is ushering in a new era of building new nuclear in America by unleashing its unique capabilities to enable American nuclear innovators to build.”

This announcement reflects Oklo’s long-standing dedication to bringing new advanced nuclear technologies to market and supporting the nation’s energy goals.

The DoE’s initiative will unlock new opportunities in the market. Second, it will encourage the faster development and deployment of emerging advanced nuclear technology. DeWitte stressed that this strategic direction is true to the one competitive edge America has—our innovation. He noted,

“The DOE is opening the door to the market so new ideas, new approaches and new designs can be built more quickly and efficiently. American innovation is one of our strategic advantages, and the DoE’s selection of a number of projects provides a sweeping injection of urgency to meet the moment and unleash American nuclear innovation.”

The Impact on Energy Infrastructure

The choice of Oklo and Atomic Alchemy is an exciting move in the direction of re-creating a more diverse U.S. nuclear ecosystem. In all of these projects, the emphasis is on the next generation of reactor designs. Specifically, they want to restart currently closed facilities, such as Palisades, and lead the way for future improvements and expansions in nuclear energy.

The DoE’s Reactor Pilot Programme is central to meeting national and global energy needs and meeting that challenge under the highest safety and environmental safeguards. Given a tight deadline of July 2026 implementation, all stakeholders are watching what happens next very closely. This timeline matches up with national priorities, including a strong interest in clean energy and sustainability.

This effort is part of a larger trend of recognizing nuclear energy’s indispensable role in our climate future. Increasingly, our traditional energy sources are being found as a point of concern. Advanced nuclear technology proves to be a solid alternative, bolstering our energy independence and security.
