The legislation would aim to ban certain high-risk uses of AI, pointing to increasing recognition of ethical considerations and impacts on public safety. The set compliance timelines outlined in the proposals give companies a clear path forward. This gives them a chance to better design their operations to comply with changing requirements.
Key Deadlines and Compliance Timeline
Relatedly, the EU AI Act implementation includes a tiered structure of compliance, starting date of February 2, 2025. This first deadline only directly aims at enforcement of bans on some specific uses of AI technologies. Perhaps the most important prohibitions are the ban on the untargeted scraping of public internet or camera footage. This practice, which creates or grows repositories of facial images, warrants real deference privacy concerns.
Following this, the framework will apply to “general-purpose AI models with systemic risk” starting August 2, 2025. Companies must comply with specific provisions by this date, while those with models already available in the market will have until August 2, 2027, to meet compliance standards. Implementation realistically, most provisions of the Act are not going to be made applicable until the middle of 2026.
