Vanda Renewable Energy (Vanda RE) announced that it has entered into a framework supply agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL). This contract will enable Vanda RE to procure up to 2.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of its EnerX battery energy storage system (BESS). On July 18, 2025 that sent shockwaves through the capital markets. It is an important breakthrough in expanding support for renewable energy projects in Indonesia, and it fully complies with the Indonesian local content requirements.
The agreement will support Vanda RE’s solar and battery project located in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, further establishing a commitment to high technical and operational standards. Vanda RE is a joint venture equally owned by Gurīn Energy and Gentari via Gentari International Renewables.
Strategic Developments in Renewable Energy
This supply agreement is only the latest milestone of recent success for Vanda RE. They include a separate $2.8 billion deal signed by the company earlier this year, agreed for a 1GW supply of solar panels to arrive in early 2025. Vanda RE has appointed the international Independent Technical Consultant as the Owner’s Engineer on the project. This decision ensures that the best planning and design practices will be followed throughout the development process.
As Gurīn Energy’s Indonesia country manager, Enda Ginting, pointed out, it’s hard to overstate the significance of this announcement.
“Today’s announcement is another critical milestone in the development of the landmark Vanda solar and battery project. Vanda RE is committed to developing the project to the highest technical and operating standards, which is why we are delighted to have secured CATL’s best-in-class batteries.” – Enda Ginting
CATL will include its BESS units at a planned new manufacturing facility in Karawang Regency, West Java province. This facility is remarkable in that it will have a staggering 15GW battery cell production capacity. Construction of this factory was started in the last week of June 2025.
Commitment to Sustainability
This strategic investment is a clear example of how to more actively support local manufacturing. It further bolsters Singapore and Indonesia’s commitment to establish a green economic corridor. Vanda RE’s efforts reflect a growing confidence among partners and stakeholders in the project’s potential.
The project is part of a larger journey toward achieving an even bigger dream of sustainable energy solutions across the breadth of the region.
“Our progress reflects the strong confidence that partners and stakeholders have in the project as well as the vision of a green economic corridor between Indonesia and Singapore. The Vanda project is a stepping stone to bringing that vision to life, and we are happy to do our part.” – [no specific person mentioned]
Future Prospects
Meanwhile, Vanda RE is continuing apace with its plans. The joint collaboration with CATL will increase the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy storage systems across Indonesia. This new partnership is well-positioned to meet growing energy needs. In doing so, it will vigorously advance environmental sustainability.
