Recurrent Energy Breaks Ground on Blue Moon Solar Facility in Kentucky

Recurrent Energy has recently launched into an ambitious development project for the soon-to-be Blue Moon solar facility in Harrison County, Kentucky. This innovative facility, which is in the midst of construction, features a capacity of 94 megawatts (MW). It is now slated to start service by 2026. This regional initiative will attract a $648 million investment. Additionally, it represents Recurrent Energy’s inaugural investment in Kentucky’s renewable energy industry.

Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy, was excited about the company’s commitment to Harrison County. He highlighted the significance of this investment, not only for the company, but for the surrounding community. This facility will deliver affordable, locally-generated energy, the kind of energy Kentucky businesses need to power the Commonwealth’s unprecedented growth.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Blue Moon solar facility – the largest of its kind in Harrison County – is expected to generate great economic impact and tax revenue. During its four-year construction phase, it will create up to 1,600 jobs at a time when the local economy is still reeling from COVID-19. Following its completion, the facility is anticipated to contribute significantly to the region’s tax revenue, helping to fund essential services and infrastructure improvements.

Harrison County Judge and Executive Jason Marshall voiced enthusiastic support for the project. He reiterated that the county would roll out the red carpet for investment. He told Recurrent Energy how excited he was to be working with them. For him, projects like Blue Moon are essential for attracting continued economic development to the small community.

The facility will generate direct construction jobs and economic activity to the community. It will create large new tax revenue for Harrison County. Combined with existing and anticipated local financial resources, this new infusion of funds should bring tremendous benefits to the region’s residents and businesses.

Power Purchase Agreement with Constellation

One of the most important aspects of realizing development of the Blue Moon solar facility is a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Constellation. Under this agreement, Constellation will buy the power and associated renewable energy certificates produced by the facility. This unique strategic partnership ensures a long-term market for all the power generated. It further deepens their shared commitment to expanding renewable energy efforts.

The PPA is an important expression of confidence in the long-term viability of solar energy as a reliable source of power in Kentucky. In the first half of 2021 alone, they recorded over 1000 megawatts’ worth of additions to the existing utility-controlled renewable infrastructure. This trend powerfully reinforces the transition to smart green energy solutions.

Future Prospects and Additional Projects

With the completion of construction drawing near, Recurrent Energy is racing ahead on the Blue Moon solar resource. Meanwhile, they are diversifying their portfolio with dynamic new developments, such as the recently announced Bayou Galion solar power plant in northeastern Louisiana. This 127 MWdc solar project continues the company’s deep dedication to the development of renewable energy from coast to coast. It’s not directly related to the Blue Moon project.
