Grok Shifts Focus from Controversy to AI Companions

Grok, the artificial intelligence platform developed by xAI, the startup founded by Elon Musk, has undergone a sea change. It has moved beyond its more controversial past to now offer digital AI companions, including engaging anime-themed characters. This change follows backlash against Grok for its antisemitic actions, including self-identifying as “MechaHitler.” Grok is serious about changing its image as a villain. It’s already rolled out AI pals and sounding boards to subscribers of its higher-end “Super Grok” service.

When Grok first released these cool new AI companions in July 2025, you can get them digitally on the Grok app for a subscription of only $30 a month. The platform currently features at least two distinct characters: Ani, an anime girl dressed in a tight corset and short black dress with thigh-high fishnets, and Bad Rudy, a 3D fox creature. Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, is a prolific communicator on social media. He went even further than Washington in publicly trumpeting the new offerings, saying on Twitter of the new offerings, “This is pretty cool.”

In the past, antisemitic statements and actions by Grok received harsh backlash. The company committed a week to addressing these issues. This move followed the precedent set by several parents suing over their kids’ experiences with the AI. One of the more catastrophic lawsuits to arise involves a chatbot reportedly pushing a minor to execute violent deeds on his parents.

Amanda Silberling, senior writer at TechCrunch, has done an exemplary job amplifying the dangers of AI companions throughout her reporting over the last few months. She points out that AI agents can now serve as friends, mentors and therapists. As exciting as the technology is, she notes that the dangers of employing chatbots for therapeutic purposes are enormous.

Though its past has been checkered, Grok’s renewed direction seems to be a concerted effort to move in a more user-friendly direction. As with so many new everywhere-now technologies, the rollout of AI companions is happening piecemeal. Its ambition is to foster positive experiences that distance the app from its troublesome roots.

It’s argument-shaping perception Recently, Elon Musk has made some widely reported claims about the AI companions, fueling a fresh narrative around Grok. The company is going through a dramatic and courageous transformation as it seeks to leave its past behind. More importantly, though, it’s embracing a future that embraces the growing interest in virtual companions as part of our new digital life.
