Belkin to Discontinue Support for Older Wemo Devices, Shifting Focus to New Opportunities

Belkin recently announced that it will end technical support for its legacy Wemo smart home products. The Wemo app that comes with the product will lose support after January 31, 2026. The impact of this decision extends far and wide to multiple device types in multiple device categories, including smart plugs, light switches, and indoor and outdoor cameras. The company recently stated that it no longer plans to offer firmware updates for such products. After this date, there will be no additional software support or troubleshooting assistance available.

The end of support effects most Wemo products released since the brand’s founding in 2011. Consumers with devices impacted by this change should prepare for a shift. Belkin is on a path to return to the more profitable parts of their business. While many older devices will lose technical support, those configured for use with Apple’s HomeKit will continue to function without Wemo’s cloud services or the Wemo app.

Belkin’s decision comes amidst a broader trend in the smart home industry, where companies must adapt to evolving technologies and consumer demands. In making this transition, there are a few key things Wemo product users need to know. Devices that are still under warranty as of the end-of-life date may be eligible for partial refunds.

“We understand this change may disrupt your routines, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” a spokesperson from Belkin expressed, acknowledging the impact this decision may have on loyal customers.

The Wemo line is another that has embraced Thread, as shown by their WLS0503, WDC010, WSC010, and WSP100. All these devices will still play nice with Apple’s upcoming HomeKit platform. These products have been built to keep people connected even when other services are cut.

Belkin has put together a great rundown of affected devices. This would allow consumers to easily and immediately tell whether or not their products will be affected by this new amendment. Customers who have older Nest devices need to be prepared for what’s coming. Beginning October 25, 2025, first and second-generation models will be disconnected, permanently disabling their connected features and making them incompatible with Nest or Google Home app moving forward.

Belkin’s Wemo line won’t turn all of your devices into junk. A majority of the features won’t be usable after support ends. This is problematic when you consider the longevity and utility of smart home products given that manufacturers are constantly updating and changing their products.
