Wärtsilä Chosen to Deliver 204MW Power Plant for Reko Diq Mining Project in Pakistan

Wärtsilä, a global leader in smart technologies, has been awarded to supply a 204MW power plant. This new facility will help finance the development of the Reko Diq copper-gold mining project in Pakistan. This significant development aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of power supply essential for mining operations in the region.

The cooperation between Wärtsilä and the Reko Diq project is based on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract. The advanced power plant will feature twelve Wärtsilä 50 engines. It will further build it out with key auxiliary equipment to deliver a robust energy solution that can withstand the harshest conditions of mining operations.

Importance of Reliable Power Supply

Further, reliability and economy of the power supply are fundamental considerations for economically efficient mining operations at Reko Diq. The construction of this new combined cycle power plant will be absolutely critical to fulfilling these needs.

Tim Cribb, Reko Diq project representative showcasing the importance of partnership with Wärtsilä. He stated,

“We are pleased to have a reliable and collaborative partnership with Wärtsilä on this considerable project. Wärtsilä’s technical expertise and strong local presence in Pakistan are highly valued.”

This public-private partnership takes an innovative approach to providing reliable, round-the-clock energy production from the power station. This certainty is important to keep up production on the mining face.

Technological Advancements and Future-Proofing

The power plant contains on-demand capabilities and includes full heat recovery boilers. These supercritical boilers are designed to allow easy incorporation of a Flexicycle steam turbine in the future. These types of technology innovations increase transparency and drive efficiency. They signal a broader commitment to being an innovative and sustainable industry leader in the energy sector.

Wärtsilä’s solutions will further enable a phased, future conversion of these engines to run on other alternative fuels. This flexibility complements the national and international trends toward cleaner, renewable energy sources almost perfectly. It bills the Reko Diq project as a groundbreaking endeavor in Pakistan’s mining sector.

Alexandre Eykerman had this to say. He remarked,

“Mining is a key sector with one of the largest growth potentials for Pakistan’s future. Projects like Reko Diq, with large gold and copper reserves, are crucial for unlocking the sector’s potential and helping Pakistan to improve its GDP.”

Timeline for Delivery

Wärtsilä’s current plan is to start delivering the equipment needed for the power plant beginning in late 2026. This overall timeline speaks to the company’s efforts and dedication to ensuring quality and precision when executing large-scale projects.

The collaboration between Wärtsilä and the Reko Diq project underscores the importance of reliable energy solutions in supporting critical industries. As an exemplary power plant of the future, this facility employs cutting edge technology and practices sustainability efforts. If passed, it will have a far-reaching impact on Pakistan’s mining industry.
