Alderman Enea Group recently launched a 400-million-euro project to modernize its distribution network. This network exchange upgrade will mainly impact the large area served by Enea Operator, the key distribution subsidiary within the group. On May 22, 2025, we finalized an agreement with Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK). This agreement will provide significant, long-range funding from 2025 through 2036, increasing the stability and efficiency of Poland’s national power grid.
With an annual budget of more than 4 billion zlotys, the program is very generous. It seeks to improve the flexibility of the national grid to better accommodate renewable energy sources (RES). Enea Group as a whole plans to invest 41 billion zlotys in the distribution sector until 2035. Their goals include prioritizing investments that modernize infrastructure to withstand extreme weather and build energy security.
Enea Group’s financing contract includes an extremely favorable loan through the Polish state with an interest rate of only 0.5% per year. The principal repayment for this loan is scheduled from 2034 to 2050, allowing the organization to allocate resources effectively while implementing its extensive modernization plans.
Grzegorz Kinelski, president of Enea Group, underlined the importance of this agreement for the company’s transformation.
“Signing the agreement with BGK is one of the key steps in the transformation of our distribution network. Thanks to these funds, we are accelerating the modernization of infrastructure, which will translate into the country’s energy security, more effective connection of renewable energy sources and active participation of energy recipients in the market.” – Grzegorz Kinelski
The joint initiative furthers the City of Gdansk and Poland’s overall objectives to position itself for national energy security and sustainable energy transitions. The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) has opened a new call for applications. They plan to co-finance electricity storage facilities, which will further invigorate the renewable energy landscape in Poland.
According to Mirosław Czekaj, another representative from BGK, EU money has played a crucial role in this change.
“Thanks to EU funds from the National Reconstruction Plan, we have 90 billion zlotys at our disposal for this purpose, including offshore wind energy. Today’s agreement is another step closer to full use of funds from this pool. Modernization of power grids will be a driving force for further investments by entrepreneurs in renewable energy sources, including photovoltaics and energy storage. The entire economy will benefit from increased energy security.” – Mirosław Czekaj
Enea Group’s initiative signifies a substantial commitment to modernize Poland’s energy infrastructure, ensuring that the distribution network is equipped to handle future demands while supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.
