Engie to Supply Renewable Energy to Cipher Mining’s Texas Data Centre

This week, Engie North America announced a major partnership with Bitcoin miner Cipher Mining. Together, they will provide the City with up to 300 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy generated from one of Engie’s wind energy sites. This agreement is an important advance in meeting the rapidly increasing demand for clean, renewable energy solutions across the United States.

With headquarters in Houston, Engie North America does business throughout the energy value chain from generation and infrastructure to energy sales. The company aims to enhance grid stability and reliability, particularly in regions like West Texas, which boasts abundant wind and solar resources. This joint venture with Cipher Mining further underscores Engie’s determination to usher in a carbon-neutral economy.

In October, Engie North America signed a PPA with Google. Commercial terms are kept confidential between the parties, but this deal will deliver green electricity from Pattern’s Chillingham solar project in Texas. Together both agreements underscore Engie’s emerging strategy to proactively address the increasing power appetites of its key customers. They focus on the company’s promise to invest more in renewable energy sources.

Cipher Mining, one of the largest Bitcoin mining companies in the US, will be the biggest recipient of this renewable energy power. This new partnership is further evidence of a longstanding, burgeoning trend. Meanwhile, data centers are racing to find green energy sources to help reduce their own carbon emissions.

“We are focused on meeting the growing need for power by our customers as they expand their operations in the US, and renewables is an essential part of supplying this increasing demand.” – Engie North America

With more than 98,000 employees in 30 countries, Engie’s global reach and experience make them leaders in the energy sector. Providing renewable energy is the company’s top priority, according to its website. It’s looking for innovative technology solutions that maximize efficiency and value of colocated renewable generation.

David Carroll, chief renewables officer and senior vice-president of Engie North America, emphasized the importance of their mission:

“Engie is committed to pursuing innovative solutions that maximise the value of renewable generation and improving cost effectiveness of delivering clean energy supply to our customers.” – David Carroll

Climate action, social progress, and creating a sustainable future is at the core of Engie’s operations. Clean energy is central to keeping up with the demands of today’s businesses. And our collaboration with Cipher Mining is an important step along this path to create a more sustainable energy future.
