Swift Current Energy Launches Largest Solar Facility in Illinois

Swift Current Energy has launched its latest solar facility, the Double Black Diamond Solar project, marking a significant milestone in renewable energy production. Developed since 2018, this facility is now the largest operating solar plant in Illinois and east of the Mississippi River. The $3.6 billion project started generating electricity in early 2024 and is expected to supply electric power to about 100,000 homes each year.

Double Black Diamond Solar also serves as a testament to Swift Current Energy’s commitment to domestic manufacturing. The facility used materials mostly made by First Solar in Ohio, highlighting the company’s commitment to bolstering American jobs. While under construction, the project directly created approximately 500 jobs. It came very close to one million safe person-hours, demonstrating its deep focus on safety and community involvement.

The effects of the facility go further than its capacity to operate. Expected to bring almost $315 million in new tax revenue to Sangamon and Morgan counties, the facility will provide a needed boost to local economies. Swift Current Energy created a $10 million community benefits fund to benefit local community institutions. This change underscores their relentless dedication to the power of inclusive, connective, community-built development.

Today, other big names like Cook County, CVS Health, Loyola University Chicago, PPG, State Farm and TransUnion draw power from Double Black Diamond Solar. They depend on Constellation NewEnergy to provide this power. Significantly, the city of Chicago buys 70% of its electricity used to run city operations—including all associated with the city’s two major airports—from this solar farm.

Eric Lammers, CEO and co-founder of Swift Current Energy, noted the increasing demand for electricity in the US.

“Electricity demand in the US is accelerating with new manufacturing load and tech needs. Our Double Black Diamond Solar facility is an example of how we are utilising US-manufacturers and American workers to provide the energy needed to charge our country’s growth now.” – Eric Lammers, Swift Current CEO and co-Founder.
