NKT, market leader in power cable solutions, is dedicated to improving their sustainability efforts. They’ve announced a long-term supply agreement for low-carbon aluminium with Hydromaking this a big step in their climate change commitments. This firm order agreement further strengthens NKT’s position to respond to the increasing demand for medium and high-voltage power cable solutions. Additionally, it cements NKT’s status as an industry leader in sustainability.
Through this partnership, NKT has obtained the exclusive rights to use Hydro’s REDUXA 4.0 aluminium. This aluminium is considered the lowest embodied carbon grade on the market. This strategic partnership secures a reliable, European supply of low-carbon aluminium. This is important both for NKT’s overall commitment to reducing carbon emissions throughout its manufacturing processes and as part of NKT’s corporate responsibility initiatives.
In October 2025, NKT won a contract of a different kind, clinching a framework agreement with Dutch grid operator Enexis Netbeheer to deliver medium voltage power cables. The estimated value of this contract is approximately €1 billion ($1.1 billion), contingent on factors such as quantity, duration, and future metal prices. This multiyear, multimillion-dollar contract reinforces NKT’s leadership position in the market. It further showcases the company’s continuing focus on sustainability and clean energy innovations.
NKT’s president and CEO, Claes Westerlind, underscored the strategic value of the agreement with Hydro, saying,
“It supports our strategy to continuously improve the carbon intensity of our power cables, thereby supporting both our own short and long-term targets and our customers’ decarbonisation ambitions.”
This collaboration not only enhances NKT’s product offerings but contributes to Europe’s efforts to build a secure and clean power grid. The emphasis on low-carbon alternatives aligns with the urgent need to reduce dependency on fossil fuel imports and promote renewable energy sources.
Through these agreements, NKT is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable energy infrastructure in Europe. The world’s largest equipment manufacturer, the company is unequivocally committed to sustainability. This advantage is not just in tackling today’s market needs but positions it as an innovative forerunner in the power cable sector.
“It is with a sense of urgency that Europe is now mobilising to reduce dependency on fossil fuel imports, introduce more homegrown, renewable power, and ensure security of supply of critical raw materials.”
Through these agreements, NKT is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable energy infrastructure in Europe. The company’s commitment to sustainability not only addresses current market demands but also positions it as a forward-thinking leader in the power cable industry.
